what I do…

There is a tender yet tentative relationship between humanity and the environment; an interconnection between the human vision and the landscape of space surrounding us. This vision fluctuates depending on a variety of conditions and social constructs. As an artist, I have imparted my current works with a suggestion of transition. Classic oil applications evolve from authenticity to instinctive reaction; a controlled inception transposes into a process of augmentation and violent reduction of paint and dimension. Moving beyond that of the original inspiration, the work invites the viewer into the helix of its’ space, which abruptly collapses and pushes beyond the picture plane. The resulting paintings strive to draw attention to the creative experience as a spatial reference point; echoing an underlying theme that mirrors the fragile ties we bear with the vast, chaotic and illusory space around us.

As a child, my mother let me draw on the closet walls in our Northwestern Ontario, Canada home. It was here I learned how the creative process could inhabit defined space and become a means of communication. It remains with me today as an integral part of the language I convey within my work. The story behind the story.

I graduated from the Visual Arts/ Fine Arts program at York University in Toronto. It was there I expanded the conventional act of observation and duplication into a broader means of applying meaning and interpretation. It was in the realm of sculpture and three dimensional design that I started to view flat surfaces as a mechanism to step beyond the confines of the space it inhabited. Adding a story within a defined area that reaches outside its’ boundaries. The work of artists such as Anthony Caro, Richard Serra, and Katharina Grosse have impacted my work in spatial dimensions, while faithfully endorsing the limitations of traditional mediums and grounds.

I currently alternate between my studio on Rainy Lake in northwestern Ontario and in Pickering, a suburb of Toronto, Canada.
